Tiivistelmä:In the 1980s, American tobacco companies set their sights on Asia, a potential bonanza since 50 percent to 60 percent of all Asian men smoke. The major roadblock was that for years countries such as Japan, South Korea, Thailand and Taiwan had banned the sale of U.S. cigarettes to protect their domestic industries. To change this, the Reagan administration took an active role in pushing for open markets and eventually achieved succes. By the mid-1980s, American firms had finally gained entry into Asia, and the benefits were dramatic. Between 1985 and 1989, exports of American tobacco products doubled as U.S. companies reported record profits.
