Tiivistelmä: | Shareholders - by virtue of limits placed on their power by corporations and the law - are usually the last group that can influence the direction of the companies they own. Some shareholders, however, recently had just such an opportunity: Owners of stock in Phillip Morris and similar companies voted on whether they should stay in the tobacco business indefinitely. Tobacco business in the USA is especially important in this respect, because cigarettes are not as popular as they used to be in the USA. The article analyzes the shareholders' right to meddle in the day-to-day operational decisions of a company or to evaluate the investment potential of a company and recommend an alternative course through the proxy process. |
