Tiivistelmä:This paper derives the inverted-U shape relationship of relative size to export ratio based on Mascarenhas (1986) and the importance of market share. The results suggest that the international strategy of Japanese firms is different depending on the firm's relative size in the industry, after controlling for some industry- and firm-level variables. Many firms had to pursue steady growth in order to maintain employment stability since they could not easily adjust their employment levels. Market leaders wwere the least pressured to do so. They used existing superior domestic corporate resources in innovation, production and distribution to squeeze further their competitors. The major way nondominant firms could grow in a slow-growth era was to export abroad.
