Tiivistelmä: | American trade in manufacturing goods between 1879 and 1940 is analyzed. The USA became the world's leading nation at the turn of the twentieth century. The bases for this success are discussed by examining the factor content in manufactured goods. The most distinctive characteristic of USA manufacturing export was intensity of nonreproducible natural resources. Furthermore, this relative intensity was increasing between 1880 and 1920. The question is asked whether resource abundance reflected geological endowment or greater exploitation of geological potential, and the answer favours the latter. The conclusion is that historical resource abundance was itself largely an outgrowth of American industrial success. |
