| Tiivistelmä: | In June 1989 a declaration was signed between the European Community and the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance which announced the opening of official relations between the two blocks and their intention to cooperate. The consequences of the joint declaration are considered. The prospects for cooperation between the two blocks are discussed. The new Community initiatives in East-West affairs are examined. The increased contacts between the EC and individual East European countries are analysed in particular in the context of trade and trade and cooperation agreements. Likely implications for the CMEA are summarized. |
