Tiivistelmä:The paper reviews some of the main ideas in historical discourse about, and contemporary constructions of, the human body, and therefore the self as embodied. The main issues of the article are the following - the Greeks: the body as pleasure or tomb; the Romans: the body as clay, corruption and corpse; the Christians: the body as temple or enemy; the Renaissance: the body as secular and private; the body as machine; constructions of the body in the twentieth century; the body as the self and towards a sociology of the body. The author states that there is no consensus on the meaning of the body and , in pluralistic society, no consensus can be expected.
