Tiivistelmä:The paper discusses the relevance of thermodynamics and related theories to ecological economics. Only theories that deal with the development of open systems far from thermodynamic equilibrium provide the important link between entropy and evolution towards higher complexity. Major new impulses for ecological economics come especially from evolutionary ecological theories. Thermodynamic approaches provide a heuristic base for the analysis of economy-environment interactions. Important implications of these approaches concern time irreversibility, ecological efficiency and the interdependencies of environmental problems and evolution.
