Tiivistelmä: | Western manufacturers have long believed that disciplined, standardized work in a hierarchical environment must inevitably alienate employees, poison labor relations, stifle initiative, lower quality, and hobble a company's capacity to change. In 1984, General Motors and Toyota set up a joint venture auto assembly plant (NUMMI) that turns this creed on its head. NUMMI shows that hierarchy and standardization, with all their known advantages for efficiency, can build on learning rather than coercion and so motivate workers and increase job satisfaction. |
