| Tiivistelmä: | The authors present data that support the opinion that in electronic industry production or - broader - handling of many variants is generally less advantageous than handling of only a few variants. They refer to a databank built up together with the consultants McKinsey. While the data support the opinion of the authors for some cases they are also consistent with the hypothesis that under certain circumstances (which seem to be very likely) production of many variants can be the only possible way to stand competition and to survive. Companies that are approached by external consultants should therefore carefully analyse their situtation and those of their competitors before starting to reduce the number of variants. |
