| Tiivistelmä: | Sales of malt Scotch whisky reached a record 2.42 mn lpa in 1997. Sales volume in 1997 was up 86% on the level of 1986. The progress of malt whisky contrasts with the fortunes of very much larger blended Scotch market which suffered a 33% decline over the period 1986-1996. At retail prices, an estimated £130 mn was spent on malt in the off-licence trade and a further £100 mn in the on-licence trade in 1997. A feature of the market has been the loss of share by all the four biggest brands. Market prospects remain bright, at least in the light of a generally weak outlook for spirits as a whole. |
