Tiivistelmä: | The question, whether and to what extent legally mandated codetermination is beneficial or detrimental to firm per- formance has been and still is at the center of a rather controversial theoretical debate: On the one hand, it has been argued that if codetermination were beneficial to stockholders and workers, firms would have introduced it vo- luntarily. Moreover, by granting workers major control rights, state programs would usually violate an important rule for ensuring rational allocation - namely, the rule that those making decisions should bear the full conse- quences of the decisions they make. On the other hand, it has been pointed out that labour relations were best charac- terized as "hold-up situations" where cooperation (an indis- pensable prerequisite to a firm's success) does not emerge automatically |
