Tiivistelmä: | This article explores the factors determining European Trade Union growth and decline during the 1950-1996 period in Western Europe. The results indicate that union decline during the 1980s and 1990s relates closely to labour market changes. Union density rates declined due to increasing unemployment, and new labour force was recruited in jobs less covered with unions. When inflation decreased, indexation clauses were disassembled, and replacements rates lowered, public employment declined and thereby the need for striking was smaller. |
