| Tiivistelmä: | The business environment for firms in transition economies changed drastically in the late 1980s when these economies moved to a more market-oriented economic environment. The authors have concentrated on this context and change; they examine the factors that help transition economy firms to change their operating know-how to reflect the needs of the new business context. Drawing on literature on organizational imprinting, knowledge based view of the firm, and firm search, the authors present two factors that affect the firms ability to change. The firms prior socialist environment has an imprinting effect on the firms capability to change its operating knowledge. Firms that search knowledge actively from distant sources are better able to change their knowledge successfully to meet the demands of the context. Both of these aspects, the socialist market imprinting and distant search also have joint interdependent impacts on the success of change. |
