Tiivistelmä:Evidence from Eastern Europe confirms the notions in former socialist literature that any effort to reform the economy without drastic political change is doomed to fail because tight political control and nonmarket coordination mechanisms are interwined with each other. However, recent experiences from China and Vietnam suggest otherwise. The authors argue that the exceptions of China and Vietnam can be explaines by the ruling party's strong initial and more efficient control, which allow the party to reform the economy without losing political control.
