Tiivistelmä:In economics, the deterrence (hereafter as: det.) is primarily focused on changing the individual's perceived (as: p-d.) expected cost of engaging in an illegal activity. In law enforcement, the primary impetus of det. is to increase the p-d. certainty of apprehension and punishment. Based on data from the Australian State of Queensland, this paper examined the det. effects of increasing the level of police presence and the apprehension rate. It was found that increasing either the number of random breath tests or the proportion of tested drivers positive for drink driving significantly reduced the number of serious crashes on the roads.
