Tiivistelmä: | It is argumented in this paper that none of the existing indices really measure firms' degree of "global specialization", that is, to what extent their allocation of resources is multidomestic or global. Introduced is a complementary index measuring how firms are configuring their value chains (here as: v-chn./v-chns.), whether they are replicating v-chn. activities from country to country or locating them in globally specialized units to exploit an international division of labour. This "global specialization" index is empirically tested on a sample of Danish MNCs. It is found that the index can identify a distinct group of firms with significantly higher degrees of global v-chn. configuration. The group's firms do not necessarily score high on conventionel internationalization measures. |
