Tiivistelmä:The term "unpaid market labor" is defined as the direct contributions of unpaid family members to market work that officially is the responsibility of another member of the household. For instance, the owner or entrepreneur can rely on relatives' help with the business operations, or in corporate of public-service setting the help can come from the executive spouse or political wife. The purpose of this article is to argue that unpaid market labor is conceptually different from paid work and unpaid domestic labor. Using information on legal cases from Canada, the author shows the policy implications of this notion and the problems that arise with dichotomous thinking about the market and the family.
