Tiivistelmä:This paper examines the monthly patterns of adverse outcomes due to the consumption of illegal drugs by recipients (hereafter as: recps.) of government transfer payments. There is found evidence that certain government cash aid recps. significantly increase their drug consumption when their checks arrive at the beginning of the month (here as: beg-of-mth.) etc. Based on data from California, U.S., the overall rate of drug-related hospital admissions is found to increase abruptly at the beg-of-mth., with admissions increasing 23 percent during the first five days of the mth. It is found that this cycle is driven largely by recps. of Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The findings suggest that "full wallets" adversely affect some aid recipients, and that policymakers should explore alternate disbursement regimes etc.
