Tiivistelmä:Medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are extremely important for rural areas as promoters of employment and social well-being. Among the main rural industries in Finland is small-scale food processing. In the near future food markets (here as: f-mkts.), a new form of competition has been forecasted to dominate in f-mkts.: chain vs. chain, rather than individual competing enterprises. This study aims at identifying the factors influencing the Finnish food industry, especially from perspectives of supply chains and SMEs', and the demands and potential for theoretical approaches to understand the companies' success opportunities. The Delphi findings suggest that horizontal networking among food SMEs could be the way of survival in the concentrated f-mkts., gaining more bargaining power in vertical relationships.
