| Tiivistelmä: | This article presents the findings of the large-scale PCB (polychlorinated biphenyls) inventory project implemented in Belarus from 2003 to 2004. Data on PCB-containing equipment of more than 2.000 enterprises was recorded: trademarks, dates of manufacture, volumes of PCBs, condition of equipment, levels of operation, descriptions of installations or storage locations. During the inventory about 1.500 tonnes of PCBs were identified, 99 percent of which was found in power transformers and capacitors. Because of its long life-time, most equipment containing PCBs is still in service. Equipment taken out of service is primarily stored at the company sites. The distribution of PCBs in Belarus among economy sectors with related regions is shown. Discussed are the problems of the PCB inventory and disposal. Included is a comparison of PCB inventory results in several former Soviet Union countries (Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Moldova) with expert estimates. |
