Tiivistelmä:This paper investigates how organizational-level and field-level meaning systems affect when firms adopt administrative innovations. For the examination, the adoption of Manufacturing Best Practice programmes by 1289 firms is analyzed. The results show that compatibility of the diffusing practice with the organization's internal meaning system predicts adaption rates, but that the strength of the prediction power declines as diffusion proceeds - consistent with institutional pressures in the form of field-level meaning systems playing an increasing role over time. The results also show that the decline occurs for sites with high exposure to institutional pressures, but not for sites with lower exposure. It is suggested that internal meaning systems and differential exposure moderate the role of institutional pressures in the diffusion of administrative innovations.
