Tiivistelmä:Starting from 1979, and incorporated into the United States copyright law (as:VARA) in 1990, certain U.S. states have extended extra copyright protection to visual artists, known as "moral rights" protection. Using difference-in-differences regression strategies, this paper compares artists and non-artists in U.S. states with moral rights laws to those in U.S. states without these laws, before and after the laws have been enacted. In this way, it is possible to test the impact of the laws on the artists', consumers', and policy makers' behaviour. It is found that the average artist's income falls by around USD 4,000 per year as a result of moral rights legislation. However, there is found no impact of the laws on artists' choices of residence or on state-level public spending on the arts.
