| Tiivistelmä: | Based on an in-depth case study of post-Soviet Latvia, this paper explores how far the European Union's (EU) political conditionality (here as: cond-y.) has contributed to democratic consolidation. The record of the impacts of cond-y. up to EU entry is examined. It is explored whether post-accession tendencies have demonstrated any significant changes after the end of Brussels' monitoring. It is shown that after four years of EU membership, the outcome is mixed with both positive and negative results. It is concluded there to be no automatic locking-in effect of European integration etc. |
