Tiivistelmä:The data on European regions suggest that culture has a causal effect on economic development. Culture is measured using indicators of individual values and beliefs, e.g. trust and respect for others etc. In order to separate the exogenous variation in culture, two historical variables are used: the literacy rate and the political institutions. At a regional level, the political and social history of Europe provides a rich source of variation. The exogenous component of culture due to history is strongly correlated with current regional economic development.
