Tiivistelmä:An empirical analysis of product differentiation is presented using a new panel data set on film-programming choice in a major motion-pictures exhibition market in the USA. Two measures of product similarity are computed, and the determinants of strategic product differentiation are investigated in a multi-characteristic space. The evidence obtained is consistent with the idea that the degree of product differentiation between theatre pairs reflects a balance between strategic concerns and contractual constraints. It is also suggested that the degree of product differentiation is negatively related to market size. Ownership seems to matter: theatres under common ownership make more similar programming choices than those with different owners.
