Tiivistelmä:Quantity surveying firms (henceforth as: qs-fms.) are characterized by their professional (here as: prof-al.) identity and knowledge-driven nature: knowledge (as: knwl.) is a key issue for their success in the competitive and dynamic business environment. This paper aims to focus on the implicit knowledge management (KM) processes undertaken in prof-al. qs-fms. in Hong Kong. Based on the proposed process model, a questionnaire survey was performed to study the opinions of prof-al. quantity surveyors on the process details. The questionnaire was returned with a response rate of 42.6 percent out of 260. The six KM processes in qs-fms., that is, acquisition, creation, storage, use, distribution, and maintaining are confirmed. There is a general lack of specifically assigned staff for knwl. acquisition (here as: knwl-acq.) from external sources, knwl-acq. having an overall mean value marginally below the passing point, and a relatively low reliance on external knwl. by these firms. The paper uncovers some of the mysteries and difficulties of transferring knwl. both within and across projects. The findings can equally be applied in other project-based industries.
