| Tiivistelmä: | This study examines the extent to which higher education (here as: h-e.) institutions in the United Kingdom (U.K.) meet the minimum standards recommended by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for the management of work-related stressors (here as: w-r-strs.). A comparison is also made between the current survey and two previous studies of the h-e. sector in 1998 and 2004. Herein, a sample of over 9,700 academic and academic-related employees working in h-e. institutions in the U.K. completed a measure of seven job-related stressors or psychosocial hazards. With one exception, that's the job control, levels of w-r-strs. in the h-e. sector exceeded the benchmarks stipulated by the HSE. W-r-strs. relating to change, role, job demands and managerial support were especially high. It is also found that average working hours remain high in the sector, with many employees continuing to exceed the weekly limit set by the U.K. Working Time Directive. Recommendations made by the HSE for interim and longer-term targets to be achieved by the management of each w-r-strs. category are provided. |
