Tiivistelmä:Small biotechnology firms (hereafter as: bt-firm/s.) are enabled to acquire needed financial capital (here as: fin-cap.) in exchange for sharing new technologies through strategic alliances with pharmaceutical firms (here as: phc-firm/s). Drawing from aspects of resource-based view and social capital theory, this paper explores the factors influencing the extent of fin-cap. bt-firm/s acquire when forming an alliance with phc-firm/s. Based on a sample of over 180 U.S. company alliances from 1995 to 2000, it is found that alliances with the phc-firm/s. having greater management control are associated with greater acquisition of fin-cap. by the biotech firm/s. Moreover, the credibility of the phc-firm/s. is found to be positively associated with the extent of fin-cap. acquired by the bt-firm/s. The number of patents of the bt-firm/s. is negatively associated to the fin-cap. received by the bt-firm/s.
