Tiivistelmä:Decribed is an exploratory research study to develop a typology showing the diversity of expatriation (here as: expatn.) from the viewpoint of cross-cultural (as: cr-clt.) adaptation (as: adptn). The study draws on a narrative approach, concentrating on not-for-profit organizations by performing 30 in-depth interviews in an Israeli-Palestinian context. Based on a narrative analysis, there are found four types of expats.: global careerists, balanced experts, idealizers, and drifters. Cr-clt. adptn. is indicated not to be necessarily requiring deep involvement or communication with the host society. However, cr-clt. adptn. requires a focus found meaningful by the expatriate in the long run. Three such focuses were identified: career advancement, local host community, and ideology.
