Tiivistelmä:This paper mixes the perspectives of the transaction-costs economics (TCE) and the knowledge-based view (KBV) in a hypothesized governance model illustrating how alliance strategies are affected by knowledge and location (here as: knw-and-loc. factors of international (as: intl.) partners. The relevant knw-and-loc. factors affecting incentives-to-teach (here as: i-to-t.) in alliances are identified and incorporated into a framework explaining the choice of contractual or equity-based (as: eq-b.) mode governing an alliance. Based on a sample of 640 intl. alliances (as: alls.), eight hypotheses are developed and tested. It is shown that the contractual mode is usually aligned with higher i-to-t. of the knowledge owners, particularly in knowledge-asymmetric (as: knw.)and location-symmetric (as: loc.) alls. Contrastingly, the equity-based mode is often selected in the alls. associated with a severe concern of competition, especially in knw.-symmetric and loc.-asymmetric alliances.
