Tiivistelmä: | This paper explores three arguments: 1. cultural accommodation by living in another culture for a while may have a long-lasting but partially dormant influence on behaviour,(here as: beh.) 2. a foreign language is a prime, activating beh. associated with this language, 3. a foreign language is expected to be a especially forceful prime for those having lived in a country where this language is spoken. This logic is explored in a prisoner's dilemma (here as: p-d.) quasi-experiment focusing on competitive vs. cooperative beh. Testing the predictions with nearly 360 Dutch students, it is found that previous exposure to an Anglophone culture with higher values for masculinity, performance orientation and assertiveness negatively influences cooperative beh. in a p-d. game when playing the game in English. |
