Tiivistelmä: | This paper examines the location and relocation abroad of divisional company headquarters (here as: hqs.) originating in a small country on the periphery of Europe. There is shown a massive movement of hqs. functions from 2000 to 2006. Building on agency, institutional, and resource based perspectives, these moves are proposed to be driven by efficiency/effectiveness and by legitimacy factors. State ownership and ownership concentration are found to discourage MNCs from moving hqs. activities abroad, but national ownership does not. Moreover, it is found that while MNCs may move their divisional hqs. to gain efficiency by co-locating with foreign subsidiaries, they keep them at home when the company becomes large, complex to manage and highly diversified. |
