Tiivistelmä:This paper explores how top managers' corporate governance orientation (henceforth as: c-g-orn.) influences a firm's strategic renewal trajectories (herein as: s-r-trjs.) over time. Using both a qualitative (1907-2004) and a quantitative analysis (1959-2004), the question is examined within the context of a large incumbent firm, that is, Royal Dutch Shell plc. It is found that top managers having an Anglo-Saxon c-g-orn. are more likely to strive exploitative and external-growth s-r-trjs., whereas those having a Rhine c-g-orn. are more likely to pursue exploratory and internal-growth s-r-trjs. Furthermore, there is also found a positive moderating effect of the proportion of shareholders from the Anglo-Saxon countries on exploitative and external-growth s-r-trjs.
