Tiivistelmä:In case homeowners install equipments afterwards to their homes following up-to-date energy efficiency standards, remarkable amounts of energy and money can be saved. From an expert viewpoint, many technical measures are profitable in relatively short payback times, considering additional costs only. Yet, many homeowners apparently don't follow this type of rationality, regarding their renovations not as investments. Based on the results of an empirical survey of refurbishment (herein as: ref/s.) activities among over 1,000 homeowners in Germany, it is argued that ref/s. are the result of a broader decision shaped by an alliance of economic and non-economic goals and motives. Energy-saving measures is expected to lower the burden of operating costs in a detectable way, securing the value of the house. Yet, to be realized, the ref/s. have also to correspond to needs like comfort, convenience or belonging.
