| Tiivistelmä: | The article investigates the diffusion of cross-functional process improvement teams in a multinational bank's Six Sigma program. Team formation rates were high where clerical employees received low salaries compared with managers, experienced poor wage growth, were less likely to be promoted into supervisory positions, and constituted a decreasing proportion of bank employment; and where professional and managerial salary gains and employment growth were strong. The authors argue that team projects are most beneficial to managers where recent or current workplace restructuring has marginalized the position of clerical employees. |
