Tiivistelmä:The article analyzes that symposium collects several contributions to the literature (four papers). Based on the Körner and Schnabel (2011) sets the stage by taking a broad perspective and analyzing the impact of public ownership in banking on long-term GDP growth. The author shows a large group of countries and demonstrates that the initial level of financial development and the quality of political institutions in a country are crucial to evaluating the impact of public bank ownership on economic growth as well as based on their findings of a strongly negative overall impact of public bank ownership on economic growth. Letting the effect of public ownership depend on the financial and political environments of a given country etc.

The symposium's articles as follows:
"Public ownership of banks and economic growth: The impact of country heterogeneity" by T. Körner and I. Schnabel ;
"Profitability of foreign banks in Central and Eastern Europe: Does the entry mode matter?" by O. Havrylchyk and E. Jurzyk ;
"Accounting for heterogeneity in cross-country bank efficiency comparisons: The case of new EU member states" by M. Kosak and J. Zoric ;
"Bank efficiency in South-Eastern Europe" by Y. Fang, I. Hasan and K. Marton.
