Tiivistelmä:This article aims at contribution by examining how capabilities (hereafter as: capbs.) and bargaining power co-evolve. As capbs. are developed, those favoured by knowledge asymmetries make decisions balancing value creation (herein as: v-r.) potential against the rent appropriation (as: r-a.) regime. Using the example of Apple's iPod development, it is illustrated how stakeholders plan for r-a. when assembling new capabilities, well before of any actual v-r. Given that firm performance is an outcome of both capbs. development and r-a, a robust theory has to include an understanding of their co-evolvement. As such, highlighted is the need of integrating property rights theory with theories of v-r. and governance costs as actors constantly make trade-offs along these dimensions.
