Tiivistelmä:A framework is introduced connecting managerial (hereafter as: mgrl.) decision making (henceforth as: d-m.) to resource (herein as: rsc/s.) building and firm performance. Taking a behavioural view of decision making, it distinguishes two separate d-m. processes: 1. there is the creative conceptualization of new rsc/s. configurations intended to deliver competitive advantage and 2. there is the development of rsc/s. needed to implement strategy. Heterogeneity (as: htgy.) in the rsc/s. of competitive firms is argued to begin from the interplay of these two processes: i. conceptualization and ii. development of rsc/s. Htgy. brings about performance differences that can be explained ex-ante from characteristics of mgrl. d-m. processes. The approach is demonstrated in a simulated d-m. environment which represents a very competitive and dynamically complex industry. Results from repeated simulation experiments performed with executive and MBA students show great differences in performance among firms, even with identical rsc/s. starting positions. It is explained how these differences come from path dependent accumulation of rsc/s. and variety in the way competitors conceptualize rsc/s.
