Tiivistelmä:This study explores the effects of contextual characteristics on exclusionary reactions. More voting for the anti-immigrant party Vlaams Blok (herein as: V.B.) with increasing immigrant population size and unemployment is expected. Using multilevel analysis, the effects of the contextual factors, individual characteristics and cross-level interactions are tested, over time in 1991-1995-1999. Based on panel data consisting of pooled individual records across repeated General Election Surveys in Flanders in 1991, 1995, and 1999 (N=3,748 respondents) to time-variant contextual data are added in 175 municipalities. As expected, immigrant population size increases people's likelihood to vote for the V.B., this effect being curvilinear. However, the level of unemployment does not explain the contextual variation in V.B. voting. At the individual level, people with lower occupational status and unemployed people are more likely to vote for the V.B. (There are more results reported in detail).
