Tiivistelmä:This article aims at analysing the role of corporate governance (henceforth as: c-g.) in explaining cross-national (herein as: crs-nat.) differences and trends in earnings inequality (as: e-eql.) in a sample of OECD countries from 1979 to 2000. It is argued that since c-g. basically deals with in whose interest corporations are run, it will have important consequences for how the returns from production are distributed among those parties having a stake. Herein, outlined is an institutional approach to c-g. with its crs-nat. variation. A number of mechanisms whereby c-g. may influence e-eql. are presented.
Based on empirical assessment, it is indicated that central aspects of these institutions, e.g. the role of the stock market in channelling capital to corporations etc. are all related to crs-nat. differences and trends in e-eql. as measured by the p90/p10 ratio. It is concluded that c-g. institutions with their respective managerial practices can make a notable contribution to the understanding of fundamental stratification processes.
