Tiivistelmä:This article argues that limitations in operational definitions of welfare regimes (henceforth as: w-rgs.) might explain why previous studies don't find any link btw. attitudes and regimes. In addition, it is suggested that w-rgs. should affect both mean levels of support for the welfare state and the variance in attitudes. A new conceptualization of w-rgs. is developed, based on a set of regime-type indicators measured at the country-level and latent variables models. The empirical analysis of support for redistribution (herein as: rdstrn.) across 15 countries suggests that the regime rank order (low to high) with respect to support for rdstrn. is Liberal (herein as: L.) Social Democratic (as: S.D.), and Conservative (as: C.). The regime rank order as to the variance in support for rdstrn. is L., C., and S.D. The findings bring about a simple 2-dimensional regime differences' typology in support for rdstrn.
