| Tiivistelmä: | This paper explores the political economy of growth in an economic union such as the European Union (EU). In the spirit of "Distance to frontier, selection and economic growth" by Acemoglu, Aghion and Zilibotti, publ. in Journal of the European Economic Association, vol. 4:1, p. 37-74 (2006) etc., as the economy approaches the world technology frontier, structural reforms increasing competition in intermediate goods sectors are necessary to boost innovation and productivity growth. Yet, reforms raise the opposition of incumbents and, hence, are politically difficult to implement etc. |
