Tiivistelmä:A familiar strategic concern for both firms and for non-profit organizations is understanding of firms' interfaces with the community. This review examines when, how and why firms benefit from community engagement (hereafter as: c-e.) strategies (as: str/s.) through a systematic review of more than 200 academic and practitioner knowledge sources on the antecedents and consequences of c-e. str/s. Evidence on the rise of the c-e. str/s. literature is described over time, its geographical spread and methodological evolution. A typology of three c-e. str/s. strategies is developed: transactional, transitional and transformational engagement. By identifying the antecedents and outcomes of the three str/s., it is found that the payoffs from engagement are largely longer-term enhanced firm legitimacy, rather than immediate cost–benefit improvements.
