Tiivistelmä:'Learning to be job ready' was a pilot scheme in northern England involving 16 long-term unemployed people being offered a 6-month paid placement in the care department branch. The project was executed with the largest college in the city specialising in post-16 education and training. The college targeted people as candidates for the programme based on their attendance on or interest in care courses at the college. Surveys, focus groups and interviews were utilised to capture the views and experiences of the participants, project workers and line managers, and also evidence of the project's effect on service delivery. The article adds to our knowledge of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in three distinct ways. The findings of the research highlight a more robust strategy for matching long-term unemployed citizens to training and job opportunities in the public sector. Secondly, a greater understanding of and empathy for the service users can be developed, strengthening the ethical delivery and quality of the service. Finally, a re-conceptualisation of Carroll's model of CSR, also incorporating the ethical and social inclusion duties of public sector not only as service provider but also as employer, offers more understanding for this under-researched element of CSR theory and practice.
