Tiivistelmä:We examine the agenda-setting political behavior of a large sample of U.S. newspapers from 1996 to 2005. This study aims at exploring the depth of coverage of economic issues as a function of the underlying conditions and the political connections of the incumbent president, concentrating on unemployment, inflation, the federal budget and the trade deficit. It is found out whether there is any significant correlation btw. the newspapers' endorsement policy, and the differential coverage of bad/good economic news as a function of the president's political affiliation. Evidence is found that newspapers with pro-Democratic endorsement pattern give more coverage to high unemployment during an incumbent Republican president than when the president is Democratic, compared to newspapers with pro-Republican endorsement pattern. This result is robust to controlling for the partisanship of readers. Similar but less robust results are found for the trade deficit. Moreover, there is also found some evidence of newspapers catering to the partisan tastes of readers in the case of the budget deficit. There is found no evidence of a partisan bias for stories on inflation.
