Tiivistelmä: | Historical studies on differences in pay are mostly based on group data and not on micro-level data. The article analyses information from a nationwide survey that covers the entire tobacco industry in Sweden in 1898. When comparing the labour market outcomes of men and women, it was found that the differences in cost varied across branches, which was reflected on the overall earnings gap in the industry. There were more females in the low-skilled segments of tobacco work but they were not excluded from the positions that had better pay and required more skill, although gender mattered more higher up. Generally gender did not matter for earnings, but due to segregation the overall differences were large. |
