Tiivistelmä:This study examines how a dimension of national culture (an individualist-collectivist orientation) is related to total entrepreneurial activity, depending on economic development, measured by GDP per capita. Traditionally individualism has been associated with high rates of company creation, using the argument of orientation towards achievement and the pursuit of personal objectives (dominant aspects in individualist cultures) determining entrepreneurial activity. The current analysis shows that a country's culture is correlated to entrepreneurship, but cannot support the idea of higher levels of individualism meaning higher rates of entrepreneurship. Using data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor on 52 countries, the results imply that a country's entrepreneurship rate is negatively related to individualism in medium or low development levels, and positively related to individualism when the level of development is high. Hence, individualism is not related to entrepreneurship in the same way in countries with different levels of development.
