| Tiivistelmä: | Despite the impressive development of substantive theories in entrepreneurship, if measurement theories are not developed, further advancement of the field is troubled. Particularly, the notion of opportunities, central to entrepreneurship research, requires decent macro-level operationalization. This study demonstrates how to apply data envelopment analysis (DEA) to operationalize innovative opportunities, and also technological arbitrage opportunities. We illustrate an example based on a sample of 66 countries during the period of 1993-2002. Estimates of innovative and arbitrage opportunities are included, the promise and limitations of such estimates are discussed, the correlation of both innovative and arbitrage opportunities with the rates of entrepreneurial activity is demonstrated, and several possible directions for future research are suggested. |
