Tiivistelmä:The aim of the article is to analyze and compare college persistence patters in minority and majority students from American and Norwegian universities and colleges. Despite having different educational and economic systems, both share the problem of ensuring educational equity. The article reviews nationally representative samples using competing risk event history analysis to estimate the relative year-to-year chance of dropping out. The results show that the US higher education systems in addition to worsening the socioeconomic inequalities between minority and majority students, also have significantly lower graduation rates for minority students. Norway did not have a difference, and although minority students in Norway are disproportionately from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds, they face less obstacles in higher education compared to their American counterparts.
