| Tiivistelmä: | This paper researches international patent application decisions of nine agricultural biotechnology companies dated 19902000 in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the European Patent Office, Japan and South Africa. The data uncover a low number of international applications despite an initial United States' application, implying very low values for patents abroad. The findings indicate that quality of invention has an important role in firms' decisions to patent abroad and that a single international application predicts multiple international applications well. Moreover, significant country fixed effects suggest great differences in business climates and patent enforcement between countries. |
